KU continues into spring on a roll

The visiting Bloomsburg Huskies had trouble staying out of the penalty box on Sunday at The Body Zone, and the KU Golden Bears made them pay dearly with five power play goals in a 9-2 win.

The winter break layoff didn’t appear to cool off KU’s red-hot offense, which has scored at least seven goals in each of its last five games.

Freshman Nathan Wydro, making his first start since September, got the win and was impressive in net, recording 21 saves and frustrating the Huskies throughout the game.

Matt Sheaffer had 5 pts (2g-3a), and Joe Eben collected a hat trick to pace the offense.

Joseph DeFilippis added two goals, and Brian Scipione and Shane Liney each netted a goal to round out the scoring.

Assists were picked up by Scipione, Eben and Mark Pawlick (2).

After the game the two teams competed in a shootout to determine the winner of their September 8th game that ended in a 4-4 tie. Wydro stopped 3 of the 4 shootout attempts he faced, and KU got goals from Eben, Gabe Moser and Sheaffer to earn KU the extra point.

The 3-point day keeps KU in a tight race with Drexel and Bucknell near the top of the standings.

Golden Bears take 4-game winning streak into winter break

The KU Golden Bears hit winter break on a roll — winners of four in a row and eight of their last 10 league games. KU sits near the top of league standings with 17 points.

The offense has really hit stride, netting 7+ goals in each of the last four games.

Matt Sheaffer (Fr / Alburtis, PA) leads the Golden Bears in scoring through the first 10 league games with 28-pts (18g-10a).

Goalie Nick Kreiser (Fr / Lebanon, PA) has been solid (and, at times, spectacular) in net all season. His play, especially early on before the offense got on track, is largely responsible for KU’s place near the top of the standings.

Gabe Moser (Sr / Wilmington, DE) is second in overall scoring with 21-pts and leads the team in assists (5g-16a).

Other forwards who have contributed on the scoreboard so far are Mark Pawlick (Sr / Cranford, NJ) 10g-4a, Joseph DeFilippis (Fr / Newark, DE) 6g-8a, Riese Grim (Fr / Reading, PA) 2g-4a, Shane Liney (Fr / Havertown, PA) 0g-2a, Tyler Anderson (So / Bordentown, NJ) 0g-1a, Nick Scott (Fr / Highland Mills, NY) 1g-0a, and Andrew Loomis (Fr / Coplay, PA) 0g-1a.

Joe Eben (So / Kutztown, PA) leads KU defensemen in scoring with 16-pts (6g-10a), followed by Brian Scipione (Sr / Ardsley, PA) 2g-5a, Dean Prozzillo (Holland, PA) 0g-4a, and Rob Goold (So / Hatboro, PA) 1g-2a.

Nathan Wydro (Fr / Royersford, PA) backs up Kreiser in goal and has seen time in a handful of games.

The Golden Bears resume practice on Jan. 22, and their next game is Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1pm versus Bloomsburg at The Body Zone.

League playoffs are scheduled for Feb. 22-24 at The IceWorks in Aston, PA.

Weekend recap: Golden Bears sweep two league games

Kutztown University picked up two league victories this past weekend.

Friday night action saw senior Mark Pawlick record a hat trick as KU topped Penn State-Harrisburg 5-1 at The Body Zone.

Freshmen Riese Grim and Joseph DeFilippis added the other KU goals, and freshman goalie Nick Kreiser had another stellar game in net, stopping 24 shots and even picking up an assist on Pawlick's first goal.

The other assists were recorded by Gabe Moser (2), Rob Goold, Matt Sheaffer, Shane Liney, Brian Scipione, Dean Prozillo and DeFilippis.

Saturday's game saw the Golden Bears claw back from a 3-0 deficit to top defending league champion Lafayette College, 5-4.

Freshman Matt Sheaffer got the hat trick on Saturday, with other goals coming from Pawlick and sophomore Joe Eben on the powerplay with 1:39 left in the game.

Saturday's assists went to Moser (3), Eben, DeFilippis, Grim and Scipione.

Kreiser picked up the win to boost his league record to 3-0-1.

The weekend sweep moved the Golden Bears into second place in the league standings.
